I try my best to stay up to date on the best way to stay connected with other art teachers. I follow many teachers on Pinterest and look at lots of the awesome blogs out there. I recently joined the Art Teachers Facebook page which is also a great resource. Yesterday, I stumbled across this site... <a href="http://www.thesmartteacher.com/">http://www.thesmartteacher.com/</a>. It is a great way to share resources with other art teachers. I just uploaded the Elements of Art Handout that I use with my 5th grades in their sketchbooks. It is a very easy way to share files. I am hoping to add more files soon. This site is also backed by companies like Dick Blick and Crystal. Very cool!<br />
<br />
I realize I might be a bit behind in my discover, but I had to share. I love finding all these great resources as I gear up for a new year :)Kristyn DeMinthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16941355102355542661noreply@blogger.com12tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5853518726723949955.post-70761113996628968592013-02-17T20:58:00.000-05:002013-02-17T20:58:04.984-05:00Monsters Love Colors<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I was at Target today and saw this book, <i>Monster Love Colors</i>, on the shelf. Being that I am an elementary art teacher, I was instantly drawn to it and, of course, had to buy it. It reminds me of, <i>Mouse Paint</i>....but with monsters Who doesn't love cute colorful monsters The primary colored monsters color secondary monsters. I already foresee a cute monster color theory lesson plan in my 1st graders future. I would definitely recommend this book! <br />
<br />
* a quick side note.... This book was $15.99 at Target, but they price match Amazon, so I only paid $10.87 :)Kristyn DeMinthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16941355102355542661noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5853518726723949955.post-46308456241266289382012-10-30T14:48:00.000-04:002012-10-30T14:48:03.489-04:00Feeling Inspired...Art and Literacy BagsThis past weekend I went to my art associations annual conference. I love going, and always come back with great ideas. One of the classes I attended was on Family Art and Literacy Bags. It was presented by Mrs. Berry, a Bay City art teacher. Here blog can be found here.... <a href="http://berryart.wordpress.com/">http://berryart.wordpress.com/</a>. She has created themed bags with coordinating books and art lesson for each class at her elementary. I love this idea! I am wondering if any other art teachers have given this a try???? It seems like a lot of work...but totally worth it. <br />
<br />
Below are some pictures I took of some of the bags. They each have a theme and tie in art. According to Mrs. Berry, she funded this through <a href="http://www.donorschoose.org/" target="_blank">Donors Choose</a>. I am wondering if there are grants out there that would work too.<br />

I have had the pleasure of teaching Jonathan. He is currently going into 8th grade and has a passion for “junk" art, experimenting and assemblages. I have been so impressed by his work, I just had to share. He has been updating me over the summer with his creations. I hope you appreciate them as much as I do.<br />

Last summer at art camp students created junk assemblages. Above is one of Jonathan’s examples. This is when I learned about his love for creating out of junk.<br />
<br />
Below is a picture of Jonathan’s studio space in his basement…<br />

</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">My 2nd grade artists have been learning about Egypt. I was inspired by Megan, at <a href="http://elementaryartroom.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">The Elementary Art Room</a>, who told be about a project she did on Britto's pyramid. I have been wanting to do a project with the contemporary artist <a href="http://www.britto.com/" target="_blank">Romero Britto</a> for a while, but I had no idea that he had created large scale pyramids for London's Tutankamen exhibit. I was excited to try to tie together the old and the new.<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">This morning I was doing my daily rounds on Pinterest and came across this <a href="http://qagoma.qld.gov.au/kids/games_for_kids">art game website</a>. After further exploration I stumbled upon the game for Pip & Pop. I had never heard of Pip and Pop, but now I think I am in love!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://interactive.qag.qld.gov.au/pippop" target="_blank"><img border="0" height="118" src="http://qagoma.qld.gov.au/__data/assets/image/0011/123797/wemissyoumagicland.jpg" width="200" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://arthound.net/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/pip-pop-17.jpg" target="_blank"><img border="0" height="264" src="http://arthound.net/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/pip-pop-17.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Their <a href="http://www.pipandpop.com.au/">website </a>has a bunch of great images, along with this <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/queenslandartgallery/6324066951/in/photostream">Flickr account</a>. I love how some of the images show the process of them putting together the installation. I definitely see an art lesson with my students in the future! What do you think? Are you new to Pip & Pop too? Or was it just me :)</div>Kristyn DeMinthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16941355102355542661noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5853518726723949955.post-47912876072009031542012-03-15T16:30:00.001-04:002012-03-15T16:34:38.957-04:00Flower Still Lives with Glue and Chalk 4th Grade students learned about different artists that painted still lives or flowers. We studied Janet Fish, Matisse, Van Gogh, Renoir, and de Heem. I wanted them to see a range of artists from Modern to the Baroque period.<br />
<br />
<div align="center"><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-UIiBjbEWUwE/T2JNYVgF1mI/AAAAAAAAAv8/Nx_Bw9qrxqo/s1600-h/100_8093%25255B6%25255D.jpg"><img alt="100_8093" border="0" height="346" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-T_ym5IQCcHg/T2JNYg4IXDI/AAAAAAAAAwE/IgXPcZK3FNw/100_8093_thumb%25255B8%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: inline;" title="100_8093" width="222" /></a></div><br />
Next, students practiced a simple still life drawing in their sketchbook. They were told that they would eventually be outlining their drawings with glue and had to avoid tiny details. I gave them this handout for ideas, but told them they could draw their own as well. <br />
<br />
<div align="center"><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-ygroyni_33U/T2JNXJGfRgI/AAAAAAAAAvc/x_hg2RULrKs/s1600-h/100_8100%25255B11%25255D.jpg"><img alt="100_8100" border="0" height="409" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-EidlcuC1tlA/T2JNXLBj_MI/AAAAAAAAAvk/oD8gsT4mJEY/100_8100_thumb%25255B12%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: inline;" title="100_8100" width="286" /></a> </div><br />
Next, students drew their flowers on 12x18 black paper. The vase was to be symmetrical and fill half the paper and then finish with flowers. Once done drawing they outlined everything with glue. Some students used little skewers to add glue to small areas. Next class, when the glue was dry, they added the chalk. <br />
<br />
This lesson was adapted from the book <em>Dynamic Art Projects for Children</em> (which is a great book). In the lesson provided they suggest using a brayer with black tempera to roll over the glue. I tried this, but was not thrlieed with the results. I found that it was best to have students use a small paint brush and black tempera and just paint the glue. Added the paint really helped pop the flowers. <br />

He has been a huge inspiration to me and my students (and will continue to be). I am blessed to have gotten the chance to collaborate with him the past few years. Mr. Rizzi, you will be missed dearly!<br />

I had the privilege of conducting a Skype Interview (along with my after school class) with James Rizzi. My after school students generated questions and got to personally ask Mr. Rizzi. <br />
<br />
Her are my two YouTube videos...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Part 1</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Part 2</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Mr.Rizzi was very generous to spend this time with my class. The kids loved him! If you would like to learn more about this experience, I will be presenting at the Michigan Art Education conference in November.</div></div>Kristyn DeMinthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16941355102355542661noreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5853518726723949955.post-69135628664053891792011-10-01T18:58:00.001-04:002011-10-01T19:11:09.466-04:00Whimsical Trees<p>One of my favorite lessons I did this past school year was whimsical trees inspired by the story <em>Willow.</em> (I know I saw this on another art education blog, so please let me know if it was you so I can give you credit).</p> <p><img style="display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto" src="http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/515qgGcNxVL._SL500_AA300_.jpg" width="288" height="288"></p> <p>After reading the story we looked at several tree pictures and discussed how we could come up with our own creative trees. Each student received a piece of 12x36 paper (I think this size really contributed to the overall success of the project). We began with tempera cakes and then used pre-mixed tempera paint. </p> <p><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-7Uhbyyq0MYM/ToebAanFadI/AAAAAAAAArE/erxApfx2yyE/s1600-h/ArtPhotos%25252010%2525202011%252520385%25255B14%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="ArtPhotos 10 2011 385" border="0" alt="ArtPhotos 10 2011 385" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-Vifqc5GWxsQ/ToebAuWx08I/AAAAAAAAArI/IihoFZAW1vc/ArtPhotos%25252010%2525202011%252520385_thumb%25255B15%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="440" height="198"></a><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-dUd_MSx_bN0/ToebBsluumI/AAAAAAAAArM/0NJNebW0ZW4/s1600-h/ArtPhotos%25252010%2525202011%252520386%25255B13%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="ArtPhotos 10 2011 386" border="0" alt="ArtPhotos 10 2011 386" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-dDwtcLmVwKk/ToebCCzTWuI/AAAAAAAAArQ/m7w7kMJ6J-c/ArtPhotos%25252010%2525202011%252520386_thumb%25255B13%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="470" height="330"></a><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-hTXs7HafLks/ToebDHdh3pI/AAAAAAAAArU/6mxVvS9N2n0/s1600-h/ArtPhotos%25252010%2525202011%252520387%25255B14%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="ArtPhotos 10 2011 387" border="0" alt="ArtPhotos 10 2011 387" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-pZbtM9l69Q8/ToebDRjdPVI/AAAAAAAAArY/rLvuJUx7cdU/ArtPhotos%25252010%2525202011%252520387_thumb%25255B14%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="225" height="170"></a><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-Sml-D94_xFM/ToebEetWPCI/AAAAAAAAArc/ZOIm8n0aagQ/s1600-h/ArtPhotos%25252010%2525202011%252520388%25255B13%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="ArtPhotos 10 2011 388" border="0" alt="ArtPhotos 10 2011 388" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-2rvoROw2EMA/ToebEgm8VcI/AAAAAAAAArg/v8_sPMAHzus/ArtPhotos%25252010%2525202011%252520388_thumb%25255B14%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="231" height="168"></a><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-yeZiTjNK2v8/ToebFgVMMLI/AAAAAAAAArk/ZAQ4OU0TPR8/s1600-h/ArtPhotos%25252010%2525202011%252520389%25255B11%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="ArtPhotos 10 2011 389" border="0" alt="ArtPhotos 10 2011 389" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-_t2vo4DH1NI/ToebGLDbEwI/AAAAAAAAAro/KoHRXHP8cGM/ArtPhotos%25252010%2525202011%252520389_thumb%25255B11%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="470" height="342"></a>A few students even decided to add a background. <a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-HaxEX_MTTek/ToebHQ4WsDI/AAAAAAAAArs/xCCt_ReM-wQ/s1600-h/ArtPhotos%25252010%2525202011%252520393%25255B11%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="ArtPhotos 10 2011 393" border="0" alt="ArtPhotos 10 2011 393" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-Ddhgryvssew/ToebHxDM15I/AAAAAAAAArw/eiVxcDDNnN0/ArtPhotos%25252010%2525202011%252520393_thumb%25255B12%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="467" height="344"></a></p> <p>The kids really seemed to enjoy the process. Plans Every year I dread taking days off of school, because I hate writing sub. plans. They always take so long, and I feel like it would have been easier to just go to school (even when I am sick). Last year I got the stomach flu unexpected and had to scramble to get something together. This is never good…I think the kids worked in drawing books or something along those lines. This may work for my elementary students, but there are always a few kids who take advantage….especially my middle schoolers. <br />
<br />
With all that said I am trying to be proactive this year. Many of you have started Pintrest accounts…which I am loving. I just started one for sub lessons: <br />
<br />
<a href="http://pinterest.com/herdabbles/sub-ideas-for-the-art-room/"><img alt="Pintrestsublogo" border="0" height="99" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-KFqzbWjzaV4/Tlz4lSY34rI/AAAAAAAAAm4/wbAlMFY0S68/Pintrestsublogo%25255B3%25255D.png?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="Pintrestsublogo" width="244" /></a><br />
<br />
Check it! If you would like to contribute to this board let me know…or make one of your own…I would love to follow it :)<br />
<br />
Here is a sub lesson that a fellow art teacher shared with me…. <br />
<img height="278" src="http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/31WE2KEDXVL._SL500_AA300_.jpg" width="278" /><br />
Share with students about the <a href="http://www.cowparade.com/">Cow Parade</a>. Different artist create painted cows around different cities in the world. I bought the above book off Amazon and it has pictures of cows that were created in New York. I like this book because It shows a cow <a href="http://www.hwelt.com/H._Welt_%26_Company,_Inc./WeltAdvisors__James_Rizzi_Current_Works.html" target="_blank">James Rizzi</a> Painted and Romero Britto. Also refer to the <a href="http://www.cowparade.com/">Cow Parade</a> website.<br />
<br />
Here are a few examples:<br />
<img height="244" src="http://www.cowparade.com/cow_image/cow/med/1164.jpg" width="209" /> <img height="251" src="http://www.cowparade.com/cow_image/cow/med/2049.jpg" width="215" /><br />
<img src="http://www.cowparade.com/cow_image/cow/med/1042.jpg" style="display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" /><br />
<img src="http://www.cowparade.com/cow_image/cow/med/1013.jpg" style="display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" /><br />
I made an outline of a cow and then kids color it with a theme. I don’t have many examples. Here is an U of M themed cow created by a 3rd grader….<br />

I have been sucked into all the cute art and jewelry there is out there. I even started an <a href="http://pinterest.com/herdabbles/owl-this-owl-that/">owl board</a> on my <a href="http://pinterest.com/">Pintrest</a> account. </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">I was at a school book fair and ran across this book…</div><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.amazon.com/Little-White-Owl-Tracey-Corderoy/dp/1561486930/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1310331447&sr=1-1"><img alt="Little White Owl" src="http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/61Ps4Z-LyqL._SL500_AA300_.jpg" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;">It is a cute little story about a lonely white owl who meets a group of colorful owls. At first the colorful owls don’t know what to think because the white owl is “different,” but they soon learn to be friends. I like the the patterns in the colorful owls.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">I read this story to my 1st graders and then we drew a simple owl together on 12x18 paper. I showed the kids how to make different eyes and beaks. Once they had their drawing done, I had them outline their owl in black oil pastel. Then students started painting with tempera cakes. </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">The next class period they finished painting with tempera cakes. Then I gave them a variety of regular tempera paint. Students added details and designs to their pictures. </div><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-E-QCwkWlTvw/ThoWV2UA70I/AAAAAAAAAmg/JONe4NFSAHk/s1600-h/100_6797%25255B11%25255D.jpg"><img alt="100_6797" border="0" height="316" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-wDvcTznYXB8/ThoWWHX7oNI/AAAAAAAAAmk/RZ2mwjuIuxg/100_6797_thumb%25255B13%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="100_6797" width="234" /></a><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-qc9YH0kJZgk/ThoWW7quDfI/AAAAAAAAAmo/BgWlJu-Gi_c/s1600-h/100_6798%25255B7%25255D.jpg"><img alt="100_6798" border="0" height="319" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-2v8eXqmCD0U/ThoWXSPT2EI/AAAAAAAAAms/Iu00yEk8s2c/100_6798_thumb%25255B8%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="100_6798" width="219" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;">I was happy with the cute results. </div><div style="text-align: center;">This past week I taught art camp with my 3rd - 5th grade students. The morning session was Painting and Printmaking and the afternoon session was 3-D Art. I used a lot of ideas from my fellow bloggers. A big thanks to <a href="http://plbrown.blogspot.com/">http://plbrown.blogspot.com/</a>, <a href="http://barbarasthoughtoftheday.blogspot.com/">http://barbarasthoughtoftheday.blogspot.com/</a>, <a href="http://elementaryartroom.blogspot.com/">http://elementaryartroom.blogspot.com/</a>, <a href="http://sleepyheaddesignsstudio.blogspot.com/">http://sleepyheaddesignsstudio.blogspot.com/</a>, and <a href="http://mrsmanzellastudentartgallery.blogspot.com/">http://mrsmanzellastudentartgallery.blogspot.com/</a> for ideas and inspiration!!!</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />

I can't believe 73 people follow what I write. I love being a part of this art teacher community. You guys are great and I am very thankful! <br />
I have been struggling with the idea of starting another blog that is mainly for my students. I wanted to be able to put up pictures of the kids working and links to neat art cites. Here is what I have come up with so far... <a href="http://dundeeart.blogspot.com/">http://dundeeart.blogspot.com/</a><br />
I would love to hear your feedback and any recommendation for fun art websites for kids. Some of the posts are modified repeats from this blog, but others are not. I have found that loading pictures as a album has been a lot easier too. We recently studied Japan and the art or paper folding, origami. As a class we created a cat and dog. Then students were allowed to try other simple animals. Then they turned their origami animals into a picture. Here are just a few examples....</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />

One project that I was excited to try was magnetic paintings. Since I had a small class of 12 students it was feasible. <br />
First we looked at some of Mr. Rizzi’s magnetic paintings (<a href="http://www.weltadvisors.com/H._Welt_%26_Company,_Inc./Constructing_your_own_3D_Rizzi.html" target="_blank">Click Here</a>). What is neat about these paintings is that the viewer can interact with the work. There is a background and then several magnetic pieces that can be rearranged to make different pictures. <br />
Students used a 12x18 piece of tag board and made a background. On each back corner we added a strip of magnet. Then using poster board the students drew and cut out accessories. Each item also had magnets put on the back. Then the students arranged their picture on a magnetic surface. <br />
Below are my students’ examples…<br />

If I did this project in the future I would try to use stronger magnets. At times we had trouble getting the small pieces to stick. Overall, I thought it was a good project, and exposed the kids to new kind or art form. <br />
Soon, I will be sharing my students' Skype interview with James Rizzi. Once, I get the huge file to upload to YouTube <img alt="Smile" class="wlEmoticon wlEmoticon-smile" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/_CEfBQIMejcs/TZpEkXbrJvI/AAAAAAAAAeI/fPFcmQaT0ts/wlEmoticon-smile%5B2%5D.png?imgmax=800" style="border-bottom-style: none; border-left-style: none; border-right-style: none; border-top-style: none;" />Kristyn DeMinthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16941355102355542661noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5853518726723949955.post-65663696045052140152011-03-29T21:43:00.002-04:002011-03-29T21:45:03.617-04:00Fluorescent Picasso Portraits My second graders just finished learning about Matisse, so Picasso worked perfectly as the next lesson. We started by reading/watching the book <em>When Pigasso met Mootisse</em>. I used the video on Storyline Online ( <a href="http://www.storylineonline.net/">http://www.storylineonline.net/</a>). The kids seemed to really enjoy this story. <img height="296" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgpv3QXocjt2y5VqHBkBaVeKD_-M2yI6rshchyphenhyphenahWPIo-7CobtMcIpyA1WFzscCo_6esRzqsoBV0L7nGGoGHHLhyphenhyphenLA0_HzUStEIZqlrv7zUGQ47AOgFHbwj64DIJoaJTGsG4FMuCApj0Nf-/s1600/when-pigasso-met-mootisse1.jpg" style="display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" width="317" /><br />
Next, we looked at some Picasso paintings and began our silly faces. Once the faces were drawn, we used oil pastels, including fluorescent (a tip from a fellow teacher), a colored the whole picture. Lastly, the kids outlined their features with black oil pastel. <br />

My only problem....I can't keep track of all the good ideas. This is especially tricky with blogs when they are constantly being updated. I have a solution! In my technology class one of my colleagues presented on the bookmarking website<a href="http://www.icyte.com/"> ICyte</a>. This site is free to educators and allows you to bookmark a page just how it is at the time you viewed it. If the page changes, you still have the original saved. Also, you can make folders aka "Projects" and add tags. <br />

Oh and I used <a href="http://www.techsmith.com/jing/">Jing</a> to take the screen shot (another cool tool).Kristyn DeMinthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16941355102355542661noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5853518726723949955.post-53694561855648711902011-02-23T07:25:00.000-05:002011-02-23T07:25:21.295-05:00Chinese Exchange Lesson, Part 2 (My Students)In my <a href="http://herdabbles.blogspot.com/2011/02/chinese-art-exchange-part-1-chinese.html">last post</a> I shared some of the beautiful pictures that I received from students in China. My students attempted to “read” the paintings and learn about Chinese kids. <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDlw6qARl9ss8qh_KT_xMpSzvCRjbqi8VBLT0XGp-wryyamrAlxNw7mkXe88UFzIBG7sYi5c59mpcCJZEeDITfOcFHm4gfyRmcmzvpMEP0aZa3vNGS8RqHr7e_TCGxbLe4gkxJZ3armnw/s1600-h/100_5872.jpg"><img alt="100_5872" border="0" height="274" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgugQZPJKHfizEWqFnDaNd_QwCYoM5vanyp2XaR7ttCBgmXEl5ddyAq4pTZV70f_2RVQknhXsRC-oXhBlRfdOJedK9tlwN1CvGeNtsks1cV4NyOv7rPdtweGcWJ-a_ylNPcQ5uri151qsg/?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="100_5872" width="402" /></a><br />
Next, my students created their own pictures to share with 3rd graders in China. We discussed ideas they could share about their life in the U.S. They were allowed to choose their medium. My only main requirement was that their picture “speak” to the Chinese students through the visual language of art.<br />

I was excited for my students to get this opportunity, because it correlates well with our focus on Art Around the World. I received a few paintings created by elementary age Chinese children to view with my classes. I was very impressed with the pictures. Here are the examples….<br />

We discussed similarities and differences that we might have. For example, when I showed the painting <em>Hide and Seek, </em>I asked the students what was going on in the painting (I didn’t tell them the title). Being that many of my students live on farms, they instantly deciphered the corn and the game the kids were playing. Next, I asked how many kids have played hide in seek in a cornfield, and several kids raised their hands. Just by looking at this painting, we were able to infer that we have something in common. Isn’t art a beautiful thing!!!!</div><div align="left"><br />

Could Use Advice!As art an art teacher I go through tons of pencils with my students. It is very important to have a good sharpener. Every morning I sharpen the pencils in the "Bad" bucket and put them in a "Good" bucket. However, yesterday my sharpener died.....<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMBXWoQV8BQFi4zIJnZl0rJpcHg3cw-w2s9uCnj9UmxQfG59POSxR0UHNYqggLDwT6eq8M3RuPeS_c6_lMlgSTvEJ4UlhMiBCAp24nKlznLOZwGJOtE7EyTNMpc3mbuXhIxLnRs4FqaFQ/s1600/100_5914.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMBXWoQV8BQFi4zIJnZl0rJpcHg3cw-w2s9uCnj9UmxQfG59POSxR0UHNYqggLDwT6eq8M3RuPeS_c6_lMlgSTvEJ4UlhMiBCAp24nKlznLOZwGJOtE7EyTNMpc3mbuXhIxLnRs4FqaFQ/s320/100_5914.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I took it home hoping my husband could fix it, but he did not have much luck. He thinks the motor is a goner. I am really bummed because I bought this sharpener at the beginning of the school year and it had been working great. I really liked it because it sharpened pencils pretty quickly and stopped once sharp. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">So....I am wondering what sharpener I should get next? Do you have a suggestions for a reliable sharpener? I am tempted to buy another one of these because I can get it cheap in the bid catalog (around $20), but don't want it to die on my again. It is an <i>X-acto School Pro</i>. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Thanks for any advice you can offer me :)</div>Kristyn DeMinthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16941355102355542661noreply@blogger.com12
